Project Process

This assignment will be completed in groups of 5 students. There will be three parts to the assignment. Each part of the assignment requires students to conduct research on the internet and use the knowledge learned to complete the given tasks.

Part 1
Act as if the members of your group are oceanographers giving a presentation at an aquarium. Three people will be the oceanographers and explain the delicate balance of the oceanic ecosystem. The other two group members will explain how the ocean impacts weather. The oceanographers must incorporate the following questions into their presentation. Feel free to add any additional interesting and perinent information to bring people to the aquarium!

Oceanographers must present:
1. Define oceanic ecosystem.

2. What products and ingredients do people get from the ocean?

3. How do we use the ocean?

4. When did life begin in the ocean and how did this lead to life on land?

5. What is the geographic composition of the ocean?

6. How does the ocean determine climate and determine the Earth's habitability?

7. What is El Nino and how does it impact the ocean and life on land?

8. What areas of the world are most impacted by the ocean and its ecosystem?

Part 2
Put together a power point presentation. In this portion of the assignment you will need to explain how we are destroying the ocean. Answer the following questions and use pictures to support your findings.

Oceanographers must present:
1. How is fishing impacting the ocean?

2. How do lost and discarded fishing nets impact the ocean and oceanic wildlife?

3. What are the most common pollutants that wash up on beaches?

4. What are the most common ways that oil enters the ocean?

5. How are coral reefs being damaged?

6. How do dams that bring electricity and irrigation water negatively impact the ocean? (Use Egypt's High Aswan Dam as a starting point.)

Part 3
During the last part of the project, all of the group members will work independently to create their own documenatary. The documentary will provide individuals with information about what will happen if we continue to pollute and destroy the ocean. Make sure that you report on what will happen to both the ocean and to our lives! Please answer the following questions in your documentary.

Oceanographers must present:
1. If we contine to overfish and pollute the ocean, how will that impact communities that depend on fish for protein to survive?

2. How will polluting the ocean impact the climate?

3. How will polluting and destroying the ocean impact our health?

4. What are steps that we need to take if we want to save the ocean?
